Heathcote flooding
Sir,—The Drainage Board Scheme IA was approved for designation by the city councillors on June 20. Early widening of the river channel below Bowenvale and Waltham Road bridges is obvious. Other improvements to the channel will follow to keep up with the increased flows from new development, and extra stormwater from older areas because of more building and paving. The three retention basins will be essential to control improved stormwater reticulation in Sock-burn-Hornby-Islington areas, which will cause increased flood flows to the upper Heathcote River. The lesser Catchment Planning Advisory Group recommendation — Wigram east basin, more house-raising, and less river widening — would mean less relief to houses around Waimea, Hunter, Eastern, and Riverlaw Terraces, which should be given reasonable relief. Garages and gardens will still be flooded. I hope Heathcote and Paparua County Councils will also support Scheme IA and that the Catchment Board will also approve.—Yours, etc., D. FAULKNER. June 24, 1988.
