Scotland Yard fears for N.Z. woman

By

TONY VERDON

in London A senior Education Department official is flying to London to trace bis daughter, who may have vanished. Scotland Yard confirmed that fears were held for the safety of Elizabeth Janet Egan, aged 24, the daughter of the Deputy Director of Education, Mr John Egan.

She had been travelling on the same railway line between London and Dover on which a British woman was murdered 10 weeks ago. Miss Egan disappeared after telling her brother last Wednesday that she was going by rail to Dover for a Continental trip. But she failed to meet as arranged friends and relatives in Rome. Scotland Yard said yesterday it was “anxious” for the former Wellington woman’s safety. Interpol is also reported to be working on

her disappearance. Miss Egan had been working as a part-time secretary at the New Zealand High Commission since arriving in Britain three weeks ago. Scotland Yard said she was reported to have been happy when she telephoned her brother on Wednesday morning to say she would be travelling by train to Dover.

That morning she collected her rucksack from the home of a female cousin with whom she had been staying in south-east London, and made her way to Victoria Station for the trip to Dover.

Miss Egan carries both a British and New Zealand passport. Mr Egan is expected to be helped when he arrives in Britain by a former Education Department colleague, Mr Peter Munn, who is serving as the Minister, Administration, at the High Commission in London.
