Waimakariri Basin
Sir, —Reading the feature article on May 20, I saw photos depicting the natural beauty of the Waimakariri Basin. Having read the article I get the impression that this fine area is going to be drastically altered, all in the name of development. The basin is described as an “exciting playground.” Surely, everyone would agree — but would this not be somewhat affected with the inclusion of further development. Being a traveller between Canterbury and the West Coast, I enjoy the part of my journey that takes me through the Waimakariri Basin with its rugged mountains, limestone formations, and expanses of tussock land. Part way through my journey I come upon the Castle Hill village. It’s a reminder of the city I’ve just left behind. Perhaps that’s what many people like about this village — it makes
them feel secure in a harsh environment. An exciting playground or development — I know which I prefer.—Yours, etc.,
RICHARD BUCHANAN. May 20, 1988.
