Employers pledge support
The New Zealand Employers’ Federation has pledged support for Maori development. The national president of the federation, Mr R. L. Wilks, said the federation welcomed the discussion paper, “Partnership Perspectives,” also known as the “Green Paper” which outlines Government moves for Maori development. The. Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Wetere, has said in discussions around New Zealand that the policy is not yet “set in concrete.” The federation had added weight to support for the policy which could enable the public sector to respond more efficiently to Maori communities. The federation suggested several proposals to make the partnership work. “First, there is good will in the business community to. be harnessed. Second, there is business acumen, financial advice and management skills to assist in Maori development planning. Third, there is our practical experience in dealing with employment.” The federation believed Maori values should be preserved and offered mutual co-operation to fulfil the partnership, he said.
