Assaults 'sad, embarrassing'
PA Auckland Dame Cath Tizard, the Mayor of Auckland, yesterday described as embarrassing to the city an assault on two Japanese visitors.
Auckland is at present host to about 450 visitors from its sister city, Fukudka, during Japan Week.
A Japanese sailor, aged 37, from the fishing boat Akebono Maru was robbed of up to $5OO early yesterday, according to the police. He and a Japanese friend were knocked down from behind soon after leaving a Queen Street nightclub. Both suffered bruises.
“It’s very sad and naturally it’s a very embarrassing time to have such a thing happen, said Dame Cath.
“Nobody wants to see anyone mugged in our streets — Japanese, New Zealanders or anyone else.
"If there was anything the City Council could to to prevent it, we would. We do what we can, we keep improving the street lighting, we keep the city in as neat order as we are able to, but we cannot stop the thugs.” About a month ago a Japanese tourist, aged 24, was beaten and robbed twice in one night, losing belongings worth $3OOO-
