Cutting deficits
Sir, —I will believe the Labour Government is sincere about cutting internal and external deficits when: 1. Roger Douglas halts the intended purchase of frigates from Australia ; and replaces them with appropriate patrol craft, saving approximately $6OO million; 2. The increase in speeding on intelligence organisations over the last four years is mbde! public, and cuts in defence spending are instituted; 3. The planned spy base near Blenheim; which Mr Lange said last year is not relevant to our needs,, is canned, saving at least $3O million. — Yours, etc., WARREN THOMSON. I April 25, 1988.
