Shopping hours
i Sir,—ln reply to N. M. Gear’s letter (April 7) on the National Council of Women’s submission to the Shop Trading Hours Advisory Committee, I would like to quote further. “Six or seven-day : shopping may mean that more people get full or part-time jobs, that students, etc., may get weekend employment and it would enable some women to get em- i ployment.” Concerns were ex- [ pressed in the submission "that ! there should not be any erosion I of family life, that employees 1
shall not be exploited by employers, that the legislation should ensure hours of work, and rates of pay be carefully controlled. An employer should not assume that an assistant wants to work at a week-end.” Tourism, changing patterns in family shop-
ping habits, flexibility to suit local and seasonal needs, were among the reasons for extending hours. For women an important reason for extending daylight shopping hours is the safety factor — many streets are becoming dangerous after dark for female shopper and worker. — Yours, etc., ELIZABETH BAXENDINE, Branch president, National Council of Women. !
