Road show will take science to school pupils

A science teacher and a technician will travel with the road shbw, which is housed in a! large articulated truck. I !i !• ! ( The teachers, Mr Tim Oughton, said the show would provide (entertaining demonstrations as well as giving pupils the opportunity (to play with at least 25 working exhibits. ! |(| ■ | By giving students aged 10 to 14 years (a ("handson” experience of science, it was hoped that some would recognises the value of the ■ subject,! and the possibility of a jscienceorientated (I career,! Mr Oughton! said. . | | ' 1 ' Written resources are being prepared so that pupils will be {(aware of the science inyolbed before the show,! and of ideas that they ban pursue afterwards. |
Each show will involve about 100 pupils, and take about 75 minutes. At least three shows a! day are planned. JI The show (is being organised by the Canterbury Science ' Teachers’ Association, 1 i (land is modelled on the (Science Extravaganza ijvhich the association held last November. !:■{:.{■ Mr Oughton! (is (pleased with the support which has been given (by the Education J! Department, the University of { Canterbury, and by the New Zealand. Army. The department has provided teacher-release days so that a full-time teacher can travel | with the show. The university is paying for the technician, and the Army' has provided the truck and: driver. The road show begins in North Canterbury after Anzac week-end, and will visit Nelson; South Canterbury, Southland, the West Coast and Otago.
