The first Master of the High Court in Christchurch, Mr John William Hansen, shown. inspecting the warrant for his appointment from the Governor-General, with his wife, Ann, and son, Stefan, aged 16. Master Hansen was sworn in by Mr Justice Holland in a public ceremony in the High Court i yesterday afternoon. Also on the Bench were Mr Justice Hardie Boys, Mr Justice Williamson and Mr Justice Tipping. Mr Austin Forbes, the president, spoke on behalf of the Canterbury District Law Society.

Master Hansen was in practice in Dunedin for some years before going to Hong Kong in 1979 where he was a coroner and magistrate before being appointed a Master of the Hong Kong Supreme Court.
