Floods
Sir, —Everyope feels sorry for the people who suffered so greatly from the recent floods. No doubt, there will be an ’ inquiry as [to why the flooding took place, why it was so serious, and what remedies will be necessary. I hope that when these deliberations take place, the removal ot] the forest cover will receive high priority. Ever since European settlement there has been an ongoing) policy to remove forest cover in order to create farm lend. We are now suffering the consequences. This action has been the catalyst)for much of the recent: damage. Forest coyer has an [ important function, to slow .down water movement* Without this cover we experience) accelerated erosion. With so much ipore knowledge at our fingertips, (there is one obvious answer -*• forest cover is vital. The long-term plan should include the planting; of native trees and [shrubs and [the regeneration of native bush.—Yours, ptc ' I i B. R. HANSENJ March 18, 1&88; , ‘ I
