Voluntary groups

Sir,—lt is interesting that the furore caused by the possible tax changes for voluntary organisations has made very little chtinge in the thinking! processes of these organisations. Most of these wellintentioned associations; serve a good purpose) with varying degrees of effectiveness, but evolu- ; tion moves ajt a greater ipace than many. of the stalwarts ir charge. All trie committees rur some form of procedure, pfteq called “office work,” but bearing no resemblance to efficiency. All want office machinery, 1 teler phones, postaf facilities, mana! gers and a place to reside. Why cannot these Organisations amaljgamate and save: on [office staff, save duplication! of' machinery, employ full-time!efficient typists and secretaries,;) but in lesser numbers |and [reside in offices ojf far less space? Each organisation would retain |ts own ideology

and philosophy (except where it could be) improved). ;The same committee would lose [none pf its control. Yet, they would be grouped in strong bodies of affinity, immediately aware) of changes [ affecting one or all bodies, and having a powerful “voice” in the community.— Yours, etc., A. S. HELM.
