Salmon contest

A Dunedin angler, Andrew Johnston, won the Waitaki River Salmon fishing competition yesterday, taking $5OOO as the first prize. . i

Mr Johnston won the competition! with ! a 10.940 kg fish ahead of Glenavy competitor and member of!the organising commitee, j Tama Te Maihoroa, who landed a 10.33 kg salmon. Both of ,the leading fish were caught on Saturday, ; the second day of the contest. A Waimate angler,! Lance Brown, finished

third with a 9.30 kg fish which he caught on Sunday. Mr Te Maihoroa won $2500 for second and Mr Brown $lOOO on top of the $5OO he won for landing Sunday’s heaviest salmon. A total of 748 anglers took part in the competition.
