Works to stay open
NEVIN TOPP
Plans to close the N.C.F. Kaiapoi freezing works were wishful i thinking by competitors said the chief executive of the Alliance Freezing Company (Southland), Ltd, Mr Sandy Murdoch, yesterday.
Mr Murdoch was replying to a suggestion by the chief executive of Freesia Investments.l Mr Mick Calder, that! either Waitaki International’s Islington works or the Kaiapoi works were "on the line” for rationalisation. The recent purchase of the Kaiapoi works from the C.S.j Stevens group indicated i Alliance’s confidence. It’s use was among the highest ;in the industry, Mr Murdoch said. ; Any suggestion that trie Kaiapoi works was “a candidate” for closing was
wishful thinking on the part of competitors, Mr Murdoch said. Mr Calder had also suggested that it was a “toss up” between the Ocean Beach and Makarewa works in Southland, but Mr Murdoch said that Alliance was working on a ! redevelopment plan for Ocean Beach. The plan had helped Alliance to be "one of the top performers in the (meat) industry.” There were no I plans to close Ocean Beach, he said. Further report, page 24
