Fashion link criticised
PA Wellington The anti-smoking group, Action on Smoking and Health, has protested against the sponsorship by the tobacco manufacturer, Benson and Hedges, of Tuesday evening’s fashion design awards pageant. The group said the' company’s objective, as; part of a multi-million dollar promotion budget, was to give young womeni the impression that smoking cigarettes was sophis-' ticated. ; An A.S.H. spokesman, Dr Peter Martin, said the Toxic Substances Board said cigarettes were the only product that killed humans when used as intended. “Yet here we have a cigarette company inten-j Jtionally enticing young (women to take up the deadly habit by falsely! implying that cigarettes and fashion go hand in hand.” i
The group said it was; about time the community looked the tobacco indus-J try gift horse in the mouth and took steps to reduce the 4137 deaths it estimated occurred each year from tobacco-related diseases.
