Unions
Sir, —Suggestions that the New Zealand union movement is some sort of millstone around the necks of employers and is the cause of unemployment are absolute tripe. These ideas have been put forward by organisations, such as the Businessmen’s Roundtable, who) would benefit the most from union activities ceasing. These organisations are more concerned’ with their profits than unemployment or people. They do not specify what “reforms” they desire. One assumes they wish to end the protection a union gives a worker. This would allow them to hire and fire people and reduce wages — in fact, do whatever they want at a whim. Individuals would have nowhere to seek justice for any unjust treatment they may have: suffered. I object to the insinuations that the New I Zealand union movement is somehow to blame for the current 100,000-plus unemployment. — Yours, etc., AARON O’BRIEN. March 1,1988;
