Attempted murder term appealed
PA Wellington A man i jailed for seven years for the attempted murder of a taxi-driver at Gisborne has had his sentence reduced to five years by the Court of Appeal. Mr Justice McMullin and Mr Justice Casey assisted Mr Justice Cooke, who presided over the case. Mr Justice Casey said the appellant Raymond Douglas Maurirere, aged 27, had a history of depression and psychiatric illness requiring several
admissions to hospital. Detailing the case, Mr Justice Casey said Mauri rere had held a knife at a taxi-driver’s throat and asked him tp call the police. The driver was; able to seize the knife,! suffering cuts to the) throat and fingers in the) process. Taking into) considera-) tion the circumstances! and the time Maurirere' had already spent in cus-i tody, Mr Justice Casey) said five years was an; appropriate sentence “in; this special case.” [ j
