Abit Leica ready for comeback
PA Wellington The group one DB 1600 at Trentham on March 12 has been earmarked as the race in which the outstanding weight-for-age performer, Abit Leica, will make his comeback. The gelding’s trainer, Warren Dymond, of Stratford, nominated the race after Abit Leica’s bold showing in a 1000 m trial
on his home course last week. Abit Leica, struck down with a near fatal viral attack in Sydney last autumn and unraced since, finished on strongly for second. “I was happy with the way he ran on,” Dymond said. "But the most encouraging aspect was the way he pulled up. He came through it very
well.” His recovery from the outing proved he has shaken the effects of the virus, compounded by a relapse when he returned to New Zealand. “Let’s hope he’s getting back to his old self,” Dymond said. “He was miserable for so long.” Abit Lecia, now seven, has been off the winner’s list since this time last
year when he came with his customary late burst to nab the subsequent A.J.C. Derby runner-up, Precocious Lad, in the Cambridge Stud International Stakes at Te Rapa. He has good form over the metric mile, especially under the weight-for-age scale which will apply on the DB 1600.
