Tasman race for Steinlager
PA Wellington Australians will get the chance to see Peter Blake’s Steinlager I when the world’s ,fastest ocean racing yachts take to sea in the Transfield Trans-Tasman Challenge which gets under way on February 27. The Trans-Tasman Challenge will be the first real
test for Steinlager I. The race, the richest ever run out of Australia, begins at noon on February 27 and will see a fleet of some 20 yachts dash across the Tasman Sea to Auckland. The race is being run by the Short Handed Sailing Association of Australia, and so each yacht will be crewed
by only two. Steinlager I will start favourite to take line honours, •but she will be pushed all the way by the flying Australian three-hulled entry Verbatim, sailed by Cathy Hawkins and lan Johnston. Steinlager I is expected in Australia about February 18 to prepare for the Challenge.
