Almost double for TQ driver
PA Wanganui Auckland TQ midget driver Graham Standring almost achieved a unique double in New Zealand speedway racing at the Wanganui Motorsport Domain. Standring finished runnerup in the national TQ midget championships in Wanganui after winning the New Zealand midget car title at Tauranga on Saturday night. Standring was able to race at Tauranga (in the bigger car), and at Wanganui after racing had been postponed because of rain. Winner of the TQ midget title was Steve Todd (Hawke’s Bay), after Standring missed his chance when- he spun out on the opening lap of the first final. Fifty cars entered the championships, and there were three races, each of 12 laps, for the 16 qualifiers for the finals. Todd aggregated 44 of a maximum 48 points to win the title. Standring scored 39 points, the same number as Wanganui’s Neil Riddick. Standring won four lap runoff to take second place, with Riddick third.
