Beacons to be a must

PA Wellington Emergency-indicating radio beacons will be compulsory on fishing boats from January 1 next year, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Jeffries. Regulations would be in force by June this year. “The fishing industry will then have six months before their vessels are compelled to carry EPIRBs (beacons),” he said. “However, I strongly urge the owners of fishing vessels to take the opportunity to fit EPIRBs as soon as possible. “The task of finding a missing vessel in the oceans around New Zealand can be very difficult because of the vast areas that often need to be searched. “The installation of an EPIRB considerably improves the chances of fishermen lost at sea being found, so it is essential that these devices become mandatory with the least possible delay,” he said.
