Tyson ‘Boxer of Year’

NZPA-AP New York Mike Tyson, who made the second defence of his undisputed heavyweight title last Saturday by knocking out Larry Holmes, was yesterday named “Boxer of the Year” for 1987 by the World Boxing Council. Tyson, aged 21, who has a 33-0 record with 29 knockouts, unified the title by beating Tony Tucker for the International Boxing Federation title last August with a 12-round decision. In

all, Tyson fought four times in 1987, also beating Bonecrusher Smith, Pinklon Thomas and Tyrell Biggs. Tyson will next fight Tony Tubbs on March 21 in Tokyo. The Sugar Ray Leonard-Marvelous Marvin Hagler middleweight title fight last April 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada, was voted “Fight of the Year.” Leonard came out of retirement and scored a disputed 12-round decision over Hagler to win the title. i
