Labour policies
Sir, —Sue Hunt’s and T. R. Loudon’s fanciful interpretations of Labour policies (January 18, 21) start from the peculiar, mistaken assumptions, that Labour equals socialist and socialism equals one-world government; everything else is distorted to fit. A more likely scenario for 1991 than Mr Loudon’s follows:. violence, crime, suicide, bankruptcy, unemployment, impoverishment, capital outflow and balance of payments all worsening, a new political party seizes power illegally. Geoff McDonald’s books become mandatory reading. The respective administrations of education, armed forces, police, unions, Maori affairs, justice and social welfare are subverted or jailed and replaced by loyal letterwriting cronies. Military-style uniforms proliferate. Drilled youth, police, servicemen and women participate with uniformed politicians and administrators in gorgeous mass rallies. Abortion is outlawed, motherhood is glorified. The working class, abandoned by Labour, terrified by, and misinformed about, socialism is enthralled and obedient. — Yours, etc., SUSAN TAYLOR. January 21, 1988.
