$400,000 cup next year
From

Wellington The Melbourne-based Carlton United Brewery is to continue its sponsorship of the Wellington Cup until 1992 at least, and the stake for the race will be $400,000 next year. This is an increase of $lOO,OOO on the race’s present value. The Foster’s Wellington Cup will be the big attraction on the final day of the meeting next Saturday, and the Wellington Racing Club will be hoping the traditional appeal of the historic race will do something to lift public interest in the meeting. The club was disap-
pointed with the response of owners and trainers for yesterday’s programme. That was reflected in the Douro Handicap, a class 3 race which for many past years has been contested in strength by horses from both islands. Only seven horses ran in yesterday’s Douro. It seems that several northern trainers preferred to stay close to home, first of all to attend yearling sales in the Waikato, and to concentrate on the Auckland Racing Club’s Anniversary week-end meeting.
The minimum stake at Ellerslie next Saturday will be $15,000 and next Monday will be $20,000.
