Ryan third in marathon
NZPA Hong Kong New Zealand marathon runner, Kevin Ryan, finished third in the Hong Kong International Marathon in a time of two hours, 24 minutes 52 seconds on Sunday. The former Aucklander took the lead at the 22km mark when, he broke away from a bunch which included the eventual winner, Cai Shangyan (China),
He held the lead for 14km on the windy out-and-back course before suffering stitch, and being overhauled by Cai (2:23.07) and England’s Hugh Jones (2:23.55).
New Zealand’s leading women’s wheelchair athlete, Patricia Hill, finished second in her event in 3:41.10.
Ashburton’s wheelchair athlete Allan Parish crossed the finish line with Hill and about 70 minutes slower than his personal best. The Able-bodied Englishman, Jones,, with a personal best time of 2:9.24, approached the race as a preparatory run for an Olympic trial.
He twisted his left knee in 1985 and has had three operations since.
