New hepatitis B vaccine
NZPA-AAP Sydney A new vaccine makes a breakthrough in Australia’s fight against the highly-infectious and potentially fatal Hepatitis B virus. Engerix B is the first genetically engineered vaccine to reach the market in Australia and medical experts expect it to be the forerunner of a new breed of sophisticated vaccines. Professor Yvonne Cossart, the head of Sydney University’s infectious diseases department, said the vaccine eventually
would result in all Australian babies being immunised against Hepatitis B. At about sAust23 ($24.60) a dose, Engerix B was half the price of the existing Hepatitis - B vaccine and easier to supply in large quantities, Professor Cossart told a news conference. Professor Cossart said she expected further price reductions for the vaccine to follow, making it easier to persuade governments to introduce widespread immunisation programmes.
