Vandals smash hut
Vandals have used an axe to smash holes in exterior and interior walls of the Grassy Flats hut in the Styx Valley, near Hokitika, and have attacked the walls of the porch.
Mr Ted Brennan, of the Department of Conservation’s Arahura district staff, said that two of the hut’s bunks had disappeared and presumably had been used for
firewood. Damage was also done to the hut toilet with an axe, which had been used to destroy the door and seat and hole the walls. Faeces were found surrounding the site.
Mr Brennan said that the damage had probably been caused the previous week-end and had been reported by a Christchurch tramper on
Wednesday. He described the vandalism as the work of “mindless morons.”
“We would appreciate hearing from anyone who can provide us with any information. Grassy Flats hut is very popular with local trampers, shooters and school parties, and it gets a lot of use from trampers doing the threepasses trip to or from Canterbury.”
