Chinese course to begin at Chch Polytechnic
A new full-time course in Mandarin will begin at the Christchurch Polytechnic this year.
The head of the languages department at the Polytechnic, Mr Dick Hockley, said people who had not studied Mandarin could apply. "We are looking for people who have the potential for some later interchange with China, in business or perhaps in
teaching.” Mr Hockley said the course was being offered because of the increasing recognition of the importance of contact between China and New Zealand. The Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations had released a report showing the potential for interchange. The course, of 25 hours a week, is the first full-
time course in Mandarin at any New Zealand technical institute.
A New Zealander, Dr Jock Hoe, who has been teaching in Shanghai, will be returning to supervise the course.
Students would be taken on for a probationary period of about three weeks, and those considered suitable would continue for the year, Mr Hockley said.
