Signora will be hardest to beat

Special correspondent Wellington Signora promises to be the hardest to beat in the $lO,OOO Ashhurst-Pohangina Cup (2200 m the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni today. Signora’s form has been most useful this season and last time she closed quickly for an excellent fourth in the Marton Cup nine days ago. At this stage Signora has an entry in the Wellington Cup, next Saturday but a start for her is still uncertain. In an even field today Mister Tee, Sweet Echo and Argonaut Style all have genuine claims.

Mister Tee is a promising young Bolak horse trained by Kevin Hughes. He has had his share of minor setbacks, but if he is near right he should improve on his last-start Woodville effort. Sweet Echo only battled in that same race, but she is capable of much better, while Argonaut Style is also a Wellington Cup entrant. He has a good record, but failed to flatter at all in the Marton Cup. Tiroji, which was seventh in the Anniversary, looks better placed in this' one, while Scorching Bay, Auto Air, Imperative and Sterling Exchange all have genuine claims in the second leg.

Selections 12.15: Sandl y, Kintyre, Oro. 12.45: Vineg. - Lil, Itsgo, Golden Rule. 1.20: Count >odhram, Carilia, Tempted, Captain’s Bay. 1.55: Eroica, Casey’s Dream, Commanding Officer. > 2.30: The Rattler, Nauta, Bard. 3.10: Signora, Mister Tee, Sweet Echo. 3.45: Squire Gray, Auto Air, Scorching Bay. 4.20: Golden Amythest, Shagroon, Diamante’s Fortune. 4.55: Papal Seal, Raisem Raz, Serenade.
