Durable colt should prove best in St Leger

From

J. J. BOYLE

Wellington

Satisfy, the busiest of New Zealand’s three-year-olds in the top grade this season, should also be the best in the New Zealand St Leger at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham today. The bargain colt from Wanganui, which won the New Zealand Derby in the inquiry room at Ellerslie on December 26, will be going out for his thirtysixth race today, but he is very durable material. When he paraded for the Wellington Stakes on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday he had the robust appearance of a young athlete in the early stages of a campaign and his run for seventh over 1600 m should have fitted him for a step up to 2500 m in today’s $125,000 classic.

Waikato stables should have a strong presence in the Leger through Na Botto and Street Hawk. Na Botto did not have all the luck going on his way to finishing third in the Derby.

Street Hawk was a disappointing favourite in the Derby but has reemerged as a Leger prospect after a big run for fourth in the Wellington Stakes.

As winner of his' last three races, in a field lacking over-all quality, Takanini’s Padre rates as one of the prospects. He had to struggle for his narrow win in the highweight on Saturday, but his trainer “Baggy” Hillis believes that run could have effected some improvement in a Church Parade colt he rates highly.

Empire Rose and Dark Moments are expected to quinella the Summer Handicap, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double, for Waikato stables and for the record-breaking stallion Sir Tristram.

Empire Rose’s position as favourite should not be threatened if Trentham again comes up with a firm track. She will be giving weight all round but 57kg should not make heavy demands on her.

Dark Moments, a four-

year-old from the powerful Gibbs stable at Matamata, was a useful third in the Qantas Handicap, her only engagement at the Auckland Cup meeting. She was five lengths from the winner, Sounds Like Fun, but there was something to like about her run from well down the field. The Manawatu Cup winner, Sir Zeus, is another . interesting fresh runner and Riccarton’s Dig In will be out to show that his nine years do not eliminate him as a threat to his juniors.

Maestri, a second runner for Riccarton, did not show quite enough on Saturday to place him high on the fancied list. But he, like the Takaniriitrained Guess, usually manages to get close to the heavy action, and could battle into one of the dividend-bearing places. The City of Sydney Handicap, a class one 1400 m sprint, has a disappointing line-up of form for the second leg of the T.A.B. double and first leg of the treble. The weight range from top to bottom is only 2.5 kg

and Self Help, one of those at the bottom, on 52.5 kg might wind up favourite, if only for a third and a fourth at her last two starts, each of them at class two level. The Evergreen Lodge Stakes, the $60,000 feature race for two-year-olds, could offer more interesting fare. Greenback, a swift son of McGinty, has won twice from three starts for the Tilling stable, and if he triumphs again today he will almost certainly go to Sydney for rich autumn races.
