Lomax wins decathlon

Terry Lomax (Old Boys) gained a comfortable win in the two-day Canterbury decathlon championship which ended at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. Lomax, who led overnight, consolidated his position in the early events yesterday and finally ended the 10event competition with 6625 points. The runner-up was Andrew McLennan (Old Boys) with 6096. Mark O'Brien (Ashburton) was third with 5740. Wayne Doyle (South Canterbury) was fourth with 5217, and Mark Slattery (Old Boys) was fifth with 5001. Lomax dominated the event. He was second to McLennan in the opening event, the 100 m sprint, but won the second event, the long jump, with a leap of 6.75 m and was never again headed on points. He also won the high jump (2.04 m 400 m (51s), the 110 m hurdles (15.685) and the pole vault (3.60 m Angus Ross (Old Boys) won the junior championship with 5665 points from Brent Morrison (Waimate), who finished with 4931.

Dean Howard (PapanuiToc H) was the winner of the boys’ under 18 championship. He scored 5172 points, beating Chris Wilkinson (QE) by 63 points in a close contest. The third finisher in a field of 12 was Robin Bush (Papa-nui-Toc H) with a score of 4759.
