SUBURBAN Merivale-Papanui easily accounted for Southern Districts in the senior suburban competition on Saturday to remain a clear leader at the end of round seven. The other three matches all resulted in draws, Heathcote, New Brighton and Richmond Working Men’s Club gaining first-innings points. At Edgar Mclntosh Park, Southern Districts declared its innings overnight, 52 runs in arrears of Merivale-Papa-nui’s 224. It then set Southern Districts 228 runs to win after declaring its second innings. After the opening pair, Alan Laurent and Bruce . Harris, were dismissed, Southern Districts crumbled to a penetrating Merivale attack. Ken Stagg took a further five wickets, giving him nine for the match, and Ron Provan was rewarded with four for 17., Southern Districts was cleaned out for 113 with the

openers scoring 67. At St Leonard’s Square, it was a surprise that Heathcote attained first-innings points. Heathcote was in a dismal position of 128 for eight chasing Sumner’s 187. Kit Chambers and Dave Ward put on an unbeaten ninth-wicket partnership which passed Sumner’s tally. Ward and Chambers scored 57 and 40, respectively, to give their team a two-run first-innings lead. Heathcote was then set a target of 180 runs to win. Time was a barrier, however, as Heathcote finished the day at 117 for seven. Richmond Working Men’s Club had the upperhand in its match with Upper Riccarton at Richmond Park chasing Richmond’s first innings of 191, Upper Riccarton was finally dismissed for 143. Richmond then batted through to afternoon tea, declaring at 138 for seven, with a session of play remaining, Upper Riccarton needed 187 runs to win, but never really excelled in its quest for victory.

Dave Stuthridge, at 51 not out, had the highest score of the match. Stumps were drawn with Riccarton 153 for five.

At Rawhiti Domain, New Brighton, already ahead overnight of Hornby’s total, batted a further five overs to have a handy 39-run lead over Hornby. Hornby then batted most of the afternoon, declaring at five o'clock to have an overall advantage of 159. Eight runs an over was a little beyond New Brighton’s reach. The match was called off with New Brighton at 100 for three. The eight teams are now divided into two groups with points carried forward to determine a second-round competition. The first group consists of Merivale-Papanui, Hornby, Heathcote, and Richmond Working Men’s Club. In the second New Brighton will meet Sumner, Upper Riccarton and Southern Districts. Two centuries were scored in lower grades. Peter Finlayson, of the Southern Districts Three D grade, scored 107 not out, the highest score of the day, and Russell Hortin, of the Merivale-Papanui senior B team reached 106. Three hat-tricks • were secured. They went to Brent Martin (Hornby Four C), Phil Wansborough (Sumner Three D), and Michael Ford (Southern Districts Four D). One of the best bowling returns went to Greg Buzzard, of the Third D Christchurch Working Men’s Club team. He took 12 wickets from two* innings. In the first innings, he took six wickets for fifteen and in the second, captured a further six wickets for seventeen runs. * Wayne Howell, of Bright Four C, also had a rewarding day, with seven wickets for eight runs. Competition points: Meri-vale-Papanui 69, New Brighton 45, Hornby 42, Sumner 41, Heathcote 23, Upper Riccarton 22, Richmond 19, Southern Districts 17. Scores.— A.
