Four yachting titles

By

BRYCE SIMS

Yachtsmen will be in for a

busy time on Lyttelton Harbour this week-end, when the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club will host four championships. The Javelins. R class, and JC class, will be holding their Canterbury championships, and the catamarans will be staging their South Island event over four races. Darryl and Michelle Pender, will be favourites to win the JC title and it will be the first time the brother and sister combination has sailed in the event together. The pair won the Brittania Cup earlier in the season. Darryl Pender who is possibly in his last season in the

class will be hoping to retain the title he won last year with Paul Duder. Their closest rivals should be the Mathew Nolan-Daniel Jamieson pairing, who are fast on the wind, but may have problems keeping up with the Penders on the spinnaker runs. Another crew who could perform well if given the right conditions is the P class skipper, Richard May, and Steven Page, from the Starling class, who are sailing together for the first time. The Sanders cup representatives, Keith and Ross May, start as favourites for the Javelin title, with . their closest challenge coming from Barry Wilcox and Tony

Roberts. In the R class, Sean Milner and Peter Hoskins start as favourites. They have been sailing throughout the season in the Macintosh brothers' boat, Growler. Their main challenge should come from Rob McGregor, and Tony Park, in Reggae, who have fitted a new mast, and have been turning in good performances this season. Neale Fitzgerald, who won the title last season with Mark McGregor on count back from Milner and Hoskin, is teaming up with lan Jackson today and the 470 sailor, Bevan Stevens,. tomorrow.
