Shannon Lad set for Pukekohe win

Special correspondent Auckland Shannon Lad needs only to show the recuperative powers of his good stablemate, Derriana, to win at the Counties Racing Club's meeting at Pukekohe tomorrow. After hard racing during the DB Auckland Cup carnival, Derriana came back to win at Thames and at Rotorua. Shannon Lad competed even more strenuously at the Auckland carnival for his second and third (Cup) placings. In his second placing, behind Kotare Chief in the Nathans Memorial, Shannon Lad carried 53.5 kg and he had 49kg in the Cup. He has 51.5 kg in tomorrow’s Newstalk IZB Cup so it is not weight that will stop him. But for being forced so wide, Shannon Lad would have won the Nathans and his performance in the cup, chasing so hard after Sea Swift and Daria’s Fun, was also meritorious.

Now a five-year-old, Shannon Lad could well be Ellerslie’s big cup winner next year. If he has a good winter then comes up again in the spring he will certainly be one of the first to consider. Shannon Lad and Derriana, tomorrow’s top weight, are both prepared at Te Aroha by Eddie Lee, who is making a name for himself as a trainer. It is hard to imagine Derriana, as good

as she is, giving 5.5 kg to Shannon Lad. However, she is a free-goer and should still be prominent. Sounds Like Fun, back into form again, Beau De Zure, Cardonagh and an interesting lightweight, Alloch have prospects as well. After being disappointing the time before, in the Jaguar Plate, Sounds Like Fun scored an impressive 2200 metres win on the fourth day of the ARC carnival. Cardonagh won the next week, at Avondale over 2200 metres and Beau De Zure, from Te Rapa, has been showing great form in the middle districts of the North Island. Beau De Zure and Alloch face tough assignments going for their third wins in a row. This will be Alloch’s first try at class 1. Alloch, a four-year-old Matamata mare, led all the way last time, in a class 3 2200 m at Ellerslie on January 1 as she did in her previous start, a 2100 m at Te Rapa. If Derriana and Alloch both try for the pacemaking it will ensure this 2050 m is run fast. She Might Hula also likes to lead and is decidedly promising. However she is an acceptor also at Trentham. Two starts back she set a 2100 m course record at Tauranga and was a runner-up meanwhile, to Beau De Zure, at Hastings.
