Milk dumping prospect

PA Auckland The prospect of largescale milk dumping remains in spite of talks yesterday between dairy industry employers and the Electricians’ Union, representing • striking maintenance electricians. The employers proposed that maintenance electricians employed in dairy factories and milk treatment stations be covered by a separate dairy industry award. The union secretary, Mr John Fisher, said, however, the union wanted to settle the national award before discussing bargaining changes.

The two-week-old strike has crippled production at a number of companies. Those affected include Pacific Steel, Dominion Breweries and the Auckland abattoir.

Dairy employers say they will have to pour milk down their drains if serious breakdowns occur at factories and treatment stations. Farmers will also have to dump milk if companies are unable to collect.

Other industries say they are barely coping and that suspensions may be necessary when many workers return from holidays on Monday.
