Checkpoint tally
Combined police and Ministry of Transport checkpoints stopped 835 vehicles in Christchurch on Christmas Eve. Eighteen motorists were given breath screening tests and nine went on to give evidential tests. Four gave blood. The main checkpoints were on Ferry Road and Pages Road. Man found dead A man with a chest injury caused by a Ramset gun was found dead in his Bryndwr home yesterday afternoon. Senior-Sergeant Chris Cole said the police checked his home shortly before 1 p.m. after a report that the man had not been seen since Tuesday. The Ramset gun, which fires bolts or nails, was found nearby.
The police were not seeking anyone in connection with the death. A $20,000 tractor was destroyed in a deliberately lit fire on Thursday night. The Ford 500 tractor, fitted with an excavator, was in the enclosed yard of Bitumix, Ltd, in Johns Road. Detective Sergeant Rick McCaskill said the yard was entered and the tractor set alight. * » » Two people injured in a fatal accident 43km south of Christchurch on Tuesday afternoon were resting fairly comfortably in Christchurch Hospital yesterday. Marilyn Margaret Hurcomb, aged 35, and Louise Margaret Etherden, aged 16, suffered moderate to serious injuries in the crash.
