Major military displays
Defence forces from 'New Zealand have been invited to join those of Australia and other nations for displays in three major bicentennial events. Army, Navy and Airforce equipment and personnel will be involved in displays on a scale which has never been seen previously in Australasia. From August until December next year, the Bicentennial Military Tattoo will tour Australia. There will be a cast of about 1200 and 60 performances will be given in different parts of the country. The performances will be staged at indoor and outdoor venues in all capital cities plus Townsville with the theme “Australia’s Military Heritage.” Military and musical contingents from the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand have been invited to attend.
In October Sydney will stage the International Naval Review and the Australian Bicentennial Air Show. Eight hours of continuous flying displays will be the highlight of the Air Show at the Royal Australian Air Force’s Richmond Base on the outskirts of Sydney from October 12 to 16. Organisers hope the world-renowned U.S. Navy aerobatic team, the Blue Angels, will top the bill at the show, which promises to combine the best of other great air shows such as Farnborough (U.K.), Oshkosh (U.S.A.) and Paris. The theme of the show, “Aviation Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” is an indication of the range of aircraft, from vintage planes to the latest military equipment, which will be displayed. The first three days will be for the trade which will be attracting commercial exhibitors and
visitors from around the world. The following two days will be open to the public. About 50 ships from Australia and many other countries, are due to arrive in Sydney in time for the International Naval Review on October 1. The
Duke of York, Prince Andrew, will be the Reviewing Officer.
Invitations have been sent to 35 nations to take part and their vessels will be encouraged to visit other ports during their Australian visit.
