Harden a surprise name for Shell Cup one-day matches

PA Palmerston North Nelson middle-order batsman, Richard Harden, is the surprise name in the Central Districts cricket team to contest the Shell Cup one-day matches.

Harden is an Englishman who played in all of the Somerset one-day matches this year and in most of the county championship threeday games. He played club cricket in Taranaki two seasons ago and is an aggressive one-day player and an attractive batsman in the mould of his county team-mate Martin Crowe. Harden recently scored a century for Nelson in a representative match against Wairarapa. The Nelson batsman, John

Smith, has been dropped for the one-day matches but a selector, Brian Jewell, said he will be opening the batting again for Central Districts in the Shell Trophy. Recalled to the team after a season’s absence is hardhitting left-handed batsman and left arm medium-pace bowler, Stephen Gill. He has been in sound club form in Nelson.

The team will be captained by lan Snook, aged 37, of Taranaki.

Marlborough’s left arm medium-fast bowler, Greg Logan, has a chance to secure a permanent place with Taranaki’s Wayne Martin at this stage available only for the Cup games and the first three-day match at New Ply-

The Central Districts Shell Cup squad is: lan Snook (captain), Stephen Robertson (both Taranaki), Mark Greatbatch (Hawke’s Bay), Tony Blain (Manawatu), Richart Harden (Nelson), Stuart Duff (Hawke’s Bay), Gary Robertson (Nelson), Derek Stirling (Manawatu), Paul Unwin (Hawke’s Bay), Wayne Martin (Taranaki), Stephen Gill (Nelson), Greg Logan (Marlborough). _ , , The former New Zealand representative, Lance Cairns, and the brilliant Zim-babwean-born Worcestershire batsman, Graeme Hick, will spearhead the Northern Districts Shell Cup challenge. Cairns, the hero of many a New Zealand limited-over

victory, has come out ol retirement to captain a side which contains three off-spin-ing all-rounders, Chris Kuggeleijn, Grant Bradbum and Hick.

In spite of a recent “pair" in a warmup game against Auckland, Bradbum will probably open the Northern innings with Lindsay Crocker. The other top-order batsmen are Hick, David White, Barry Cooper and Kuggeleijn.

The team is: Lance Cairns (captain), Derek Beard, Brendon Ward, David White (all Bay of Plenty), Chris Kuggeleijn, Brian Barrett, Grant Bradbum, Lindsay Crocker, Graeme Hick, Bryan Young (Hamilton), Barry Cooper, Karl Treiber (Northland).
