Ultra Sound entitled to favouritism at Timaru today

By

DAVID MCCARTHY

The Gore trained Ultra Sound, a fine third in the Wrightson One Thousand Guineas last month, is entitled to favouritism for the Show Gate Fillies Mile at Timaru today but if Spangles races and produces that touch of brilliance which set her apart in the spring it should be an absorbing contest

The paths of the two rivals have crossed just once beside the Guineas when Spangles ran removes below her best That was in the Canterbury Belle Stakes in October when Spangles made a winning debut finishing two lengths clear of Ultra Sound. The latter, however, was less seasoned than her connections would have liked due to weather conditions in the deep south during the winter and early spring. After a good placed effort on her home track. Ultra Sound returned to Canterbury to gamely run down East Point over 1400 m at Motukarara before her big effort in the Guineas when she came from far down the field at the 600 m.

While Ultra Sound appears to have had no problems after that outing, the same cannot be said for Spangles. The Kerr stable have worked long and hard to fit her for racing again, free of the muscular problems she has experienced, and they seemed to be winning the battle judging by her work late last week. Spangles may not be at the level of fitness she attained in October, having missed work after the Guineas, but if she’s anywhere near it she should still be more than just a force to be reckoned with in this field.

Royal Friend has come to hand nicely.

She looked smart and more than a little unlucky as a late two-year-old at Riccarton and seems to have gone on with it Dancer’s Rhythm, Red Chiffon and Morgan Page are all above average but so far they have looked held by the two favourites. Red Chiffon might be the best of them. Some moderate previous fields have resulted in the Show Gate losing its listed status this season but the 1987 event promises to be a very interesting contest which should come down to a battle between two talented fillies. South Canterbury stables look to hold a strong hand in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Fairmont Sprint which features an even line up. Star of Travolta has drawn wide. He has often been disappointing but there was something to admire about his last run at Invercargill. He could upset more favoured runners such as Wanda Girl, which is trained at Washdyke by Philip Jones, the Graeme Jackson pair of Bewildering and Gratify, which are more than useful on their day, Innocent Victim and the consistent Lightning Lad. To further confuse the issue Windvale Gold could be considered on the strength of her first up win on this course last season when she comfortably beat Wanda Girl.
