Kaiapoi to resume killing
Boiler attendants at N.C.F. Kaiapoi went back to work at midnight last night and killing at the plant was expected to resume this morning. A spokesman for Stevens N.C.F., Mr Bryan Ward, said the company expected normal work to continue.
The company and the Stationary Engine Drivers’ Union met for talks yesterday and they are expected to continue
today. But there was still not a full resumption of work with strike action pending at the company’s Sockburn plant from tonight. He said talks today would help resolve the situation. The company was prepared to honour the present rates of pay and the Freezing Industry Tradesmen Workers Agreement but only if the boiler attendants went back to work at the Sockburn
plant. “There is still not a full resumption of work,” he said. Mr Norman Dewes, South Island advocate for the Stationary Engine Drivers’ Union, whose four members had paralysed the Kaiapoi plant, said the union would ensure there was no spoilage or wastage of product because of the action. He said notice of strike
action would stay in place at Kaiapoi and the union could impose a restriction at “any time.” He said the company had made a statement protecting the rates of pay for the boiler attendants, and the company had been "agreeable” to maintaining F.I.T.W.A. rates of Pay. No dates have been set for resuming conciliation for the union’s national award.
