Drivers’ award talks fail

Ancillary drivers award talks have broken down after the employers’ offer was rejected by the Drivers’ Union.

The Canterbury Drivers’ Union secretary, Mr Don Cunninghame,' said the employers had offered 9.1 per cent and a storemen and packers’ al-

lowance. Ancillary drivers are seeking an 8.6 per cent wage rise and $32.50-a--week industry allowance as agreed by the general drivers. The national drivers’ award has been split into three sectors covering general drivers, ancillar-

ies, and contractors. Ancillary drivers are still covered under the original drivers’ award. Mr Cunningham said there were unlikely to be further talks until January because of the unavailability of dates before Talks for the contract drivers will resume in

Wellington next Thursday and the union is also seeking 8.6 per cent and the allowance for the contract sector. He said all contractors were paying the new rate apart from two groups of national carriers who were refusing to sign any deal above 7 per cent.
