Alcohol misuse

Sir,—l appreciate the support of J. P. Estall (November 25) in my concern about alcohol misuse. However, I do not. feel helpless about it. I think New Zealanders are beginning to recognise that alcohol abuse is a major public health issue in this country and that it is the most serious drug problem we face. This Christmas, we in T.E.A.M. are focusing our attention on the issue of drunken driving and we are getting excellent response from the public. Nearly half of all fatal accidents and a quarter of all road injuries involve alcohol. We believe that if we are to significantly reduce the road toll in New Zealand we must reduce our very high level of alcohol consumption and realise the real cost of misuse of alcohol. — Yours, etc., DIANE SHANNON,

Towards Ending Alcohol Misuse. November 27, 1987.
