Licorice buildings

Sir,—Many new buildings in central Christchurch resemble gigantic licorice allsorts. These cubes, striped black and white, represent only the duller varieties, noticeably predominant in the bag. Are we to expect monstrous equivalents of those rarer ones, the cylinders of licorice with the pink coconut rings? Or even the miniature licorice tea cakes enshrouded in multicoloured minispheres? Many years ago someone (I have forgotten who) wrote that licorice allsorts taste as if made of sweetened sawdust. This was clearly not the view of a connoisseur. Perhaps it is more true of the construction of the Christchurch versions?—Yours, etc., A. R. CRAWFORD. November 25, 1987.
