Festival rivalry missing?

The spirit of Christmas may be alive in Christchurch but the spirit of competition is absent The Christchurch City Council has had no entries for its best dressed building competition. To put the city in festive mood, the council has this year allocated $58,000 for street decorations and lights. It has also invited city businesses to get in on the act and dress up their windows and buildings. A holiday prize for two anywhere in New Zealand was offered by Air New Zealand and the Christchurch Motel Association. It seems, however, that businesses are not interested. Yesterday, the council had no takers for the contest

But, with entries open until Christmas Day itself, the spirit of competition may well make a comeback.

The council got a better response from its invitation to businesses to contribute towards the street pole decorations. One company has pledged the full $3OO for a decoration; five others have promised donations towards the decoration fund.

Its approach to all construction companies using cranes on city sites to string Christmas lights on the cranes met a warm response from the Paynter Corporation. Tonight, the crane on the Clarendon Hotel site will be lit up. No response has been received from other companies.
