Tenor soloist for choir concert

A New Zealand-born soloist, Edmund Bohan, will feature in Saturday’s Harmonic Choir concert. He will appear as tenor soloist in the choir’s presentation of Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio.” Edmund Bohan has returned to live in New Zealand, after a 25-year singing career in Britain. He has sung in opera and operetta, as well as a soloist in oratorio and a singer of Franz Lehar’s “Tauber songs.” He also broadcast regularly on radio, and his commercial recordings have been released on a number of labels.

His return to live in New Zealand with his family is to meet future concert and opera commitments and to give training to young New Zealand singers.. Bohan will take the role of the Evangelist in “Christmas Oratorio.” As

well as a number of important solos, the Evangelist provides continuity between the cantatas, choruses and solos. “Christmas Oratorio” is really a compilation of six separate cantatas, which were originally sung on six separate occasions between Christmas Eve and Epiphany. Put together they tell the full Christmas story from the birth of Christ, the adoration of the Shepherds, the approach of the Wise Men, the fears and plottings of Herod, the naming of the child and the frustration of evil. As well there are interludes of reflections and comments on the story. The mood throughout is one of joy and gladness.

The other soloists for the performance will be Roger Wilson (bass), Judy Bellingham (contralto) and Alnslie Bannister (soprano).

Roger Wilson makes another appearance with the choir as bass soloist He is well known to local audiences and choirs. He has sung with the Harmonic Choir already this year in its September “Dream of Gerontius” concert

The soprano soloist for the performance will be Ainslie Bannister, from Dunedin. She has extensive experience in opera oratorio and recital work and records regularly for Radio New Zealand.

Judy Bellingham will be the contralto soloist She is now well known oh the local musical scene and has sung with the Harmonic Choir many times.

The choir will be accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the conductor will be David Childs. The concert will be in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament It will begin at 8 p.m.J‘ .... -J
