Band prepares for festival
The Canterbury Provincial Youth Brass band held its first formal rehearsal in Ashburton on Sunday in preparation for the trip to the Pacific Basin band festival in Hawaii in March. Under the baton of Mr Noel Taylor, deputising for Mr John Snowling of Hastings, the band sightread much of the material it will play in lead-up concerts and on the trip, on which the hosts will be the lolanui School of Honolulu and the University of Hawaii. Bands from many Pacific rim countries will be at the festival, which will have more than 1000 students.
It will take the form of seminars, clinics and sessions for individuals and bands, both brass and concert. Mr Snowling, who will conduct the Canter-
bury band, is also conductor of Hastings Citizens and the New Zealand Youth bands. The 41 band members, five officials and seven supporters have been hard at work raising the $l3OO each required for the trip. With representatives from every band in Canterbury, apparently only the Ashburton and Timaru representatives already have their fundraising covered. Before leaving New Zealand on March 22, the band will assemble at Timaru, whose band has provided 15 of its members. It will return on March 29. Before its departure the band plans concerts around the province, and parents were informed yesterday of the planning to date at a meeting held after the rehearsal.
