Labour debate broad

By

CHRISTOPHER MOORE

Government privatisation programmes failed to surface during Saturday’s Labour Party’s area party conference in Christchurch.

Despite the presence of several Government members of Parliament, including the Minister of Health and Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill, delegates did not refer directly to the recent statements add suggestions that the process of prlvatisatlon would expand. Health services and the proposed establishment of a private university 'caused some debate while aq address on youth issues by Richard Northey, the member of Parliament for Eden, resulted in some questions about employment opportunities and training schemes for young people. Overall, the attention of the large number of delegates from branches throughout the region appeared to focus on broader Issues of Government policy, supporting ah earlier suggestion by the regional chairman, Mr Mike Morley-Bunker, that party members were reserving judgment until they had met their local members of Parliament during the Christmas break.
