N.Z. bowlers beaten

PA Hong Kong Scotland beat New Zealand, 21-14, in cold, bleak conditions in a shortened quarter-final match in the Hong Kong Classic Pairs lawn bowls competition yesterday.

In the 18-end encounter Peter Beiliss and Rowan Brassey started badly against the young Scottish pair of lead, Richard Corsie and skip, Brian Middlemass.

But despite a late rally, and with Middlemass in menacing end killing

form, the New Zealanders were unable to match the accuracy of the Scotsmen. Other quarter-final matches were won by Australia, 18-13, over Wales, Ireland, 21-10, over England and Hong Kong’s Filipino Club who upset the top qualifier Canada, 16-14. The final week-end of the tournament was affected by bad weather brought about by a hotcold weather collision between tropical typhoon Nina and the first cold snap of the winter.

Beiliss and Brassey were in with a strong chance at the sixteenth end of the shortened 18 end encounter (the match had originally been scheduled for Saturday afternoon) when they held four shots. But Middlemass killed the jack with his third drive attempt leaving the score at 17-14. Earlier the burly 24-year-old Middlemass had also succeeded in killing the jack with a final bowl when the New Zealanders held three.
