Jimmy Peau 'unavailable’
PA Auckland The Commonwealth Games heavyweight boxing champion, Jimmy Peau, said last evening he was not available to represent Western Samoa in the Olympic Games in Seoul next year. The Samoa Boxing Association president, Billy Meredith, said Peau . had been nominated for the national team for the games. Peau said: “No way. I
haven’t had any discus- i sions with the Samoan i boxing people over there.” Words were exchanged 1 between Peau and the New Zealand national 1 boxing trainer, Alan Scalfe, after the fighter’s i poor form at the World 1 Cup in Yugoslavia earlier I in the year. and the atmosphere between the two improved at a meeting with Sir David Beattie, the former Governor-General and patron of the New Zealand Boxing Association. “I will definitely be available for New Zealand,” Peau said. “I am a true blue Kiwi. “Western Samoa is waiting on the side if I don’t make it in New Zealand, but right now I am definitely boxing for New Zealand.”
