Minister’s son quits, charge dropped

PA Wellington A charge of assault against Koro Tainul Wetere, the son of the Minister of Maori Affairs, has been dismissed. In the District Court at Wellington last week. Judge Henwood dismissed the charge after the police prosecutor Sergeant Michael Mann said the police would offer no evidence. Wetere, aged 26, a prison officer, had pleaded not guilty of assaulting Christine Mary Edwards at Tawa on October 27. Sergeant Mann said that when the officer in charge of the case went to see the complainant to prepare the file for the defended hearing, she said she did not want to proceed with her complaint. She said that since Wetere had now resigned his position she felt justice had been done, Sergeant Mann said. Mr Peter Boshier appeared for Wetere.
