ROWING Union's senior oarsmen performed, with credit in the second Craw Can pennant regatta at Kens Reach yesterday. The senior men's crew of Geoff Perry, Kim Calvert, Brent Mirfin and Grant Mirfin had a comfortable win over the more experienced Avon premiers in division one of the coxed fours and later Perry and Calvert combined to take division one of the coxless pairs from Avon’s Martin Bamford and Don Symon. In the coxed fotirs the Christ’s College crew suffered from a head wind, a contrast from the tail-wind conditions that prevailed in Saturday’s racing. Division one of the eights was won by the self-styled Avon scullers crew (otherwise known as “Walt Disney*’) with Union’s Dale Maher in the stroke seat and three other former internationals, Steve Donaldson, Duncan Holland and David Lindstrom in the boat Remarkably, the Avon scullers’ time of 6min 13.7 s in the flat water was exactly the same time as the Avon seniors, stroked by Greg Collins, recorded in winning the second heat Easily the closest finish of the day came in division five of the eights with Union holding out another novice crew, Avon, by less than a metre. Union’s time was only sixtenths of a second faster. No pennant race points are being awarded until the final day of the three-regatta series which concludes on the week-end of December 12 and 13.
